A recent tweet surfaced online about a school, Topfaith secondary school, separating boys and girls in class and making the girls sign an undertaking to never talk to the boys. Whoa😯
This is a very pricking issue as the school is supposed to be an avenue for not just learning but socializing with others. Interestingly, it’s not a new development as it has been happening in schools where the communication between opposite sexes tend to be curtailed by school authorities most likely to uphold morality. However, is separating opposite sexes a way to go about upholding morality or creating a better learning environment?
In a study, some girls in an all girls school opined that the “all girls” environment allows them to focus more in class and talk about sensitive topics without jeers from the guys. The principal also claimed that the atmosphere is better for learning🤐.
Another group opined that the students will not properly develop socially and otherwise in such an environment. The school is patterned after a real society and is intended to groom students to face the outside world, so depriving them of one part will definitely affect their cognitive development.
Being someone who attended an all girls school at some point, I can testify that the social life of such students suffer some level of distortion, they tend to see things from a one-sided perspective and are unprepared for life in a real society. Besides, curtailing relations with the opposite sex in school will in no way prevent immorality, these children are not under a watch outside their class and there are a lot of avenues to indulge in immorality. In the case of the school in question, it is also a sexist move to make the girls sign an undertaking to never talk to the boys, aside the fact that outlawing such communicating is a breach of their fundamental right to freedom of expression and association.Undoubtedly, the social development of such students will definitely be impaired.
what do you guys think about this?, Did you attend a uni-sex school or experience similar situations in your school?, How did it affect you?. Leave a comment below and don’t forget to like, follow and share. Ciao!
